Alessandro Vittoria (1525-1608) was the pupil of Jacopo Sansovino and the most important sculptor in Venice in the late 16th c. He did a great deal of decorative work in the Doges Palace after the 1577 fire and there are religious works in Sta Maria de’Frari and other Venetian churches but he is best known for his portrait busts, many in Venetian Galleries. Other works are in Berlin, Chicago, New York and Washington.
